It's not simple to spot young footballers who are destined for the top of the game. There are countless of starlets who have a genuine opportunity at a professional career but fail to make the cut for their teams. There are so many variables that go into player development that predicting who will be a star and who will not is impossible.Consider the time when Brendan Rodgers was in charge of Liverpool. At the time, the Reds possessed Raheem Sterling and Jordon Ibe, both predicted for greatness, but the former has undoubtedly had the better career.

There's also no assurance that the young players Liverpool has identified in recent years will play a key role for the club in the future. However, evidence from the Championship suggests that, under Michael Edwards' supervision, the Reds have been on the correct track with their young players in recent years. Julian Ward, who will take his position in the summer, has a fantastic hit rate.

The candidates for the EFL Awards have been announced. If would be a great surprise if Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovi is not named the best player in the second tier for 2021/22. If he isn't, the award will be given to someone with a Liverpool link. Mitrovic's teammate Harry Wilson, who was transferred to Fulham by the Reds last summer, has been nominated for the award after a strong season in which he scored 10 league goals and led the Championship assists chart with 14 assists at present.

Dominic Solanke, who made 27 appearances for Liverpool in 2017/18, scoring once, and was moved for a cost of about £19 million, is the second player competing for the award. The 24-year-old is a fantastic illustration of how luck can alter a player's career, but he's not alone. After struggling at Bournemouth at first, Solanke has scored 25 goals in all competitions this season, putting the Cherries firmly in contention for promotion. Whether or not he succeeds in the Premier League, Liverpool's talent assessment process was correct when he was signed.

The winner of the Championship's first ever young player award is significantly more likely to pique Kopites' interest with the EFL having had one award across their three divisions in the past. Whereas Fulham had two nominees for the main award, Nottingham Forest has two, with Brennan Johnson and Djed Spence vying for the title. Fabio Carvalho, a 19-year-old Fulham midfielder who appears poised to go to Anfield when his present contract expires this summer, completes the selected three and is the focus of Liverpool supporters' attention. Even though he only has seven goals and the same number of assists, he is still considered one of the top three players in the division, which speaks volumes about his silky skills. This may be the first transfer coup for Ward, who has grabbed the lead after two hits for Edwards.

Carvalho recently stated that he had completed 28 carries that resulted in a shooting or a critical pass, putting him among the top 20 Premier League players in this category.
