Between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Liverpool veteran Steven Gerrard has identified who he believes is the better player.

Former England teammate Gary Neville questioned the current Aston Villa manager on the Overlap YouTube channel on who he believes is the greatest player of all time.

Gerrard nearly immediately responded, saying:

"For me, Lionel Messi"

The former Liverpool captain also praised Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo, but went on to explain why he chose the Argentinian. "I'm not someone who would say anything negative about Ronaldo because he's a sensation," he continued. They were the two in my age who were simply...the numbers are just...when you're a footballer yourself and you've done it yourself, the stats are just... I'm not sure who will do it again, and I'm not convinced it will happen again."During Ronaldo's first stay at Old Trafford, Gerrard faced the Portuguese superstar on numerous occasions. In 2008, the now 37-year-old became the most recent Premier League player to win the Ballon d'Or.

In a dream five-a-side squad, Gerrard would choose Messi over Ronaldo.

In March, the renowned midfielder appeared on the podcast 'The Greatest Game with Jamie Carragher.' A former Reds teammate requested the 41-year-fantasy old's five-a-side lineup.

"There are certain players who are on a different level than anyone else out there, Messi and Ronaldo," Gerrard said, according to GiveMeSport. "But Ronaldo doesn't get in my team." I'm more interested in what you plan to accomplish for the team. What do you think we'll be able to accomplish together? Ronaldo will win you trophies, but I like to play as part of a team rather than as an individual, so I'll always choose that route."The Villa manager addressed his remarks against United's striker. Ronaldo's selfish streak, according to the Englishman, was a beneficial trait because his goalscoring instincts were unequalled.

With 807 goals to his name, Ronaldo currently owns the record for most recognised goals in men's professional football, having scored against Tottenham in March.

Ronaldo and Messi are unquestionably two of the best players to ever play the game, with a combined total of twelve Ballon d'Ors. The discussion over who is the best player might go on indefinitely.
