SEVEN DEAD AFTER BOAT CAPSIZE ON VOLTA LAKE.

Seven passengers have been confirmed dead in a boat accident on the Volta lake in Afram plains area in Eastern Region.

The boat which was carrying 30 passengers from Dzemani to Havekope. Thursday April 14th, 2022 at about 8:00 am met a heavy storm on the lake causing it capsize.

Thirteen (13) passengers were rescued by local fishermen but the seven drowned. The deceased include 5 females and 2 males.

According to the Assemblyman for the area Mr. Gershon Akorlie, the rescue team after the sad incident found seven (7) dead bodies who are all females.

Speaking to Coverghana.com.gh news team, the Assemblyman said, the search for the remaining dead bodies are still underway. He explained that, the seven bodies found dead have been deposited at the mortuary in Asikuma after official report to the Ghana Police Service.

Mr. Gershon Akorlie said, three boats from the Havorkope set off from Dzemeni around 2pm in the afternoon of Thursday. Two of the boats arrived safely but one did not come. Upon further interrogation, they realized that, the third boat capsized in the middle of the river.

Immediately, a rescue team got to the scene around 8pm – 9pm in the night where some of the people in the boat were saved.

Meanwhile, some of the people on board were able to swim ashore, while the rest cannot be found. It’s reported that, about thirty (30) persons were on board before the incident happened.
