The simple truth about Manchester City not doing well in the Champions League is simply down to teams in Europe not being afraid to match them boot for boot. Let’s look at the premier league, they press teams and win possession back with ease. But in the Champions league, one must remember that you facing champions upon champions. Teams who have won their leagues and have good players.
They play quick-fire football alright in Europe. But then when it comes to turning their chances into goals they don’t. The reason is in Europe teams have a good defensive set up and they limit City to just a few chances, as compared to when they play in the premier league and chances come at a premium for them.
City’s coach Pep Guardiola seems to get his tactics wrong in Europe especially when it comes to the two-legged playoffs. City becomes complacent in these games. One might say it might be down to pure luck or it is not yet their turn to win the Champions League. But it is just down to poor tactical issues. Could be the formation in Europe they use? Could be down to teams overpowering them because they have watched thousands of video clips of City. Or it could be down to teams having good or better players to beat them. I think it won’t be long until City win the Champions League if they can get their tactics right. Could it be this season in the ongoing 2020/2021 season? Well possible. I mean they butchering teams this year or one can say they had an easy group. Well to be honest it could be a factor. Tottenham knocking out City on away goals a couple of years ago just showed how teams view the Champions League. The prize money to be won. The media attention that team will get. And the players they can afford to buy will be at a luxury.
I think City have a chance to win this year’s Champions League in the 2020/2021 season, not because of their impeccable squad. But due to their impressive discipline and making sure to see out teams till the last minute.
