Akatsi disturbances: MUSEC orders closure of bars selling illegal drugs
The Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) in Akatsi has directed that bars in the municipality selling illegal drugs be closed down with immediate effect following the unrest between the police and the youth.
A meeting was held on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, with Traditional Authorities and youth leaders within the Akatsi South Municipality to find amicable solutions to recent happenings between the youth and the police.
Some resolutions were given by the council in a communiqué issued after the meeting, which included that injured persons receiving treatment be released immediately to their families.
The communiqué also charged the police to investigate and close down drinking spots and bars that sell illegal drugs.
The council also wants the courts and police to hasten the process of prosecuting cases to enable the public to have confidence in the institutions.
Meanwhile, a section of the public in Akatsi, especially the youth, is not happy with the outcome of the MUSEC meeting.
Speaking to Citi News, the Speaker of the Volta Regional Youth Parliament, Faisel Abdul-Iddrisu, noted that, the communiqué lays too much emphasis on the youth and does not seem to offer any sustainable solutions to the happenings in Akatsi.
“It is unfortunate that the communiqué the MUSEC issued tends to focus on the youth instead of finding solutions to the happenings here. Police have been accused of unprofessional conduct, yet, nothing has been done about it. The youth are being killed, and their deaths have not been investigated fully, which is contributing to the anger in the youth. That is more important”.
Tensions have been rising within the Akatsi South municipality between the youth and the police for weeks now.
The youth complain that the police are being unprofessional and maltreating them.
The youth have been agitated ever since and are calling on the police and the leaders in the community to intervene to avert more deaths
