Nemanja Matic, a midfielder for Manchester United, has declared that he would quit the club at the end of the current season. The announcement was announced on Instagram by the 33-year-old, who joined from Chelsea in 2017.

His whole statement was as follows:

"After much deliberation, I have decided that this will be my final season with Manchester United. My decision has been communicated to the board, the manager, and the players.

It has been a tremendous honor and joy to play for such a prestigious club. Thank you so much to the fans for your everlasting support.

I'm going to give it my all till the end of the season to help my teammates finish strong."

Matic has slipped down the Old Trafford pecking order, averaging just 994 minutes of Premier League action this season. The Serbian still has a year left on his Manchester United deal, but he has decided to leave the club early.

Matic failed to win any trophies during his five-year tenure with the Red Devils. He was, however, a member of United's FA Cup and Europa League runner-up teams in 2017-18 and 2020-21.

Matic's next move as a professional footballer is yet unknown. Despite the high-profile signings of Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane, and Jadon Sancho, Manchester United has fallen short of expectations thus far this season.

The Premier League giants were knocked out of the Champions League in the round of 16, as well as the FA Cup (fourth round) and Carabao Cup (third round) (third round).

United currently is in seventh place in the Premier League after 31 games, with 51 points. As a result, finishing in the top four, which will ensure Champions League participation next season, will be a difficult task for them.

Erik ten Hag, the manager of Ajax, is reportedly close to joining Manchester United this summer. The club might undergo a dramatic overhaul under the Dutch tactician. As a result, it wouldn't be surprising if numerous additional players followed Matic's lead and left Old Trafford.

Ten Hag will, understandably, have his work cut out for him if United wants to reclaim their former glory. It'll be intriguing to watch how they get along and what fortunes they have in store for them in the upcoming campaign.
