Fasting, Toothpaste and Miswaak
QUESTION
Can I brush my teeth using toothpaste while fasting?
ANSWER
Yes it is allowed to use toothpaste while fasting. However just be careful that you don't swallow any of it.
Otherwise that will break the fast.
Shaikh Ibn Baaz said regarding using toothpaste while fasting:
“There is nothing wrong with that so long as one is careful to avoid swallowing any of it.”
(Fatawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baz, 4/247)
🔹 *Want to earn double benefits?*
Use the siwaak instead.
This way you get rewards for following the Sunnah AND also get to clean your teeth at the same time!
🔹The Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam LOVED to use the siwaak and would would use it all the time during his day and nights.
In fact he Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam loved it so much that he said:
“Were it not that it would cause hardship to my ummah, I would have commanded them to use the siwaak for every prayer.” (Bukhaari)
🔹And he said:
“The siwaak purifies the mouth and is pleasing to the Lord.” (al-Nasaa’i- saheeh by al-Albaani)
🔹 *Recommendation*:
How about using both, toothbrush AND siwaak?
Clean your mouth using the toothbrush and toothpaste after Suhoor and before you go to bed.
Use the siwaak with every wudhu. And throughout the day and night, whenever you need it.
So you get the best of both.
And Allaah knows best.
