Man United is set to compete with Manchester City for the services of Argentine midfielder .
Manchester United has deployed scouts to monitor River Plate midfielder Enzo Fernandez in recent weeks.
According to the Daily Mail, the 21-year-old Argentine, who plays central midfield, has a £20.6 million buy-out option this summer, and United scouts were in attendance to watch the youngster in action against Fortaleza in the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday, when Fernandez scored in a 2-0 win.
Man United have been looking for a midfielder for some time, and with Nemanja Matic set to leave at the end of the season, the need for bodies in that area of the pitch will only grow.Fernandez has spent his whole career at River Plate, with the exception of a loan spell at Defensa y Justicia in 2020. The midfielder has appeared 11 times for the Argentinian club this season, scoring four goals and assisting on three others.United have been linked with a number of midfielders in the build-up to the summer transfer window, but the Fernandez connection appears to be the most solid so far.
The 21-year-old can also play as a holding midfielder, so he should be able to fit into the next Man United manager's system no matter what formation he employs. It's unclear if he'll play with Fred in a defensive two or as part of a midfielder trio.
Aside from United, scouts from Real Madrid and Manchester City have shown interest in the 21-year-old.With Fernandinho set to leave at the end of the season, the Argentine could step in as a replacement. With City's midfield three set in stone, Fernandez would have a year to grow and learn under Pep Guardiola before attempting to break into the squad. Julian Alvarez, his current colleague, is scheduled to join Man City this summer after registering with the club in January, and this could be used as a bargaining chip.
For the River Plate player, the struggle between the Red and Blue sides of Manchester has only just begun; we may know which side he selects by the summer.
