The PFA Premier League player award is awarded to the most exceptional player every season to a player who has been able to have an impact on his club on the field of play. Every season 5 contenders compete for the award. Nominees are announced at the end of the season.
The likes of Mohammad Salah Ghaly, Son Heung-Min, Harry Kane, Joao Cancelo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden, and Diogo Jota realistically all have a chance of taking this award. Don't forget this award is decided by votes by the players in the league.
Let us look at some of the aforementioned players and see how they have fared for their teams in the 2021/2022 season.
MOHAMMAD SALAH GHALY- He is this season's stand-out player. Scoring a goal of the season contender in the game away to Watford. He started the season brilliantly scoring 10 times in his first 9 games, he has 20 goals so far this season in the Premier League. Also recorded 11 assists to his name. He was bang on form. His form has slumped a bit. This happens to every quality player, they say form is temporary but class is permanent. That is why even after drawing blanks in successive matches, he recorded an assist away to Manchester City at the Etihad.
KEVIN DE BRUYNE- One of the most talented players to ever grace the league. Known for his superb crosses, ability to find a pass, and goal-scoring ability. He has 11 goals this season, recording 3 assists. City is top of the league. In good contention to win another Premier League title. Judging by past winners of this award, it is all down to player performance, instead of goals or assists. Ruben Dias won this award not so long ago and even he plays as a defender.
SON HEUNG-MIN-He started the season well scoring a goal on the opening day of the season. Tottenham as a team at the start of the league was not so impressive, but since the turn of the year Son has picked up some form. He has 17 goals in the premier league currently and has recorded 6 assists to his name. With the arrival of Dejan Kulusevski into the side from Juventus, Son went on a goal-scoring spree. He even recorded a hat trick against Aston Villa just recently. Tottenham has lost 10 matches in the league this season so far.
SOME OUTSIDE CONTENDERS FOR THE AWARD ARE
JOAO CANCELO- Some say this player can become a forward. His exceptional passing and crossing are a sight to behold. No wonder he is top of the passing statistics in the Premier League. He has 1 goal this season. Contributing 6 assists so far. Should he go the rest of the season injury-free he could rake up more goals and assists. Therefore putting him in better stead for the award. He is a wing-back who can play on both wings. His shooting ability is unmatched.
DIOGO JOTA- Underrated, underappreciated by many. But if you talk of an impact sub this player is up there. Scoring decisive goals when all hope is lost. Scoring goals at a premium and worked hard to the extent that he is now starting matches. He has 15 goals this season, yes this is not a typing mistake. He has scored 15 goals and is slowly propelling his way to the top of the chart. Even if he does not win this award he will win an award soon.
