The first professional bout for Africa’s sole medalist in the men’s featherweight at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Samuel Takyi was an upset for his opponent, Kamarudeen Boyefio, in the early hours of Saturday, April 16.

Samuel Takyi knocked out Boyefio in the second round after he went down thrice in the first round in their 12-round bout at the Ga Mashie Hall of the Bukom Square Boxing Arena.

The victory set the place agog as fans of Samuel Takyi jubilated over the victory.

The stoppage of the bout in the second round did not go down well with Boyefio and his camp as they claimed he was still strong to fight after series of unrelenting hefty blows from Samuel Takyi.

This infuriated Boyefio, who did not wait for the declaration of Samuel Takyi as the winner, thereby walking out of the ring to the dressing room.

It took the interventions of the Chief Executive of Officer of Bazooka Boxing Promotions, Ike Quartey, and other executives of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) to calm Boyefio’s camp down before he could walk off the ring to the dressing room.

After winning Ghana’s first Olympic medal in any sport in 29 years at Tokyo 2020, boxer Samuel Takyi announced his intention to end his amateur career and turn professional.

Takyi won men’s featherweight Bronze in Tokyo by reaching the semi-finals, where he lost to eventual silver medallist Duke Ragan of USA.

After the second round victory, Takyi assured his admirers of more victory in the coming years.
