Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta has commented about the attitude in the Gunners' dressing room following a shock loss to Southampton in the Premier League. The Gunners were defeated 1-0 by the Saints on Saturday, making it three league defeats in a row.
"They are really down today," Arteta said during his post-match press conference (via Metro). "They are down because they can't find the right answer apart from what we can do better around the box, and not to win the match."
He added:
That's the frustration: you shake someone's hand who is better than you, and you have to do something, you have to believe in yourself, you have to be critical of yourself. But it's impossible to understand and accept when it happens the way it did - aside from 25 minutes against Palace and a brief stretch against Brighton in the early half.
After having up to four matches in hand against other Premier League teams, the Gunners have struggled to make their chances count. They appeared to be on track to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2016. However, due to their poor form, they may be forced to continue in the Europa League.
Arsenal has been struggling in recent games, picking up a slew of defeats.
With a game in hand, they sit three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.
Arsenal loses for the third time in a row in the Premier League after failing to convert chances. They are now in danger of missing out on Champions League status for next season. Arteta's young Gunners were unable to reach the back of the net against Southampton, losing 1-0 and dropping to sixth place.
Arsenal failed to score in 90 minutes despite dominating the game for long periods of time. In fact, Arsenal's dismal offensive has only scored twice in their last five games.
On the day, Southampton's attack would show to be superior. In the 44th minute, Mohamed Elyounoussi scored off a cutback, putting the game out of reach.
