France Football has announced certain changes to football's most coveted award the Balon D'or. From the 2022 season onwards, performances would be based on what transpired, from the months of August to July that is when the European football season ends. It would no longer be based on a calendar year that is from January to December as previously done. The changes were made due to the controversial circumstances surrounding Lionel Messi triumph in 2021.The awards would be based on individual performance, fair play, and player's ability and collective achievement to the club the player plays for. The awards would be voted by 100 journalists and then the award ceremony would be held in October 2022. With this the journalist who will vote would be from countries ranked in FIFA's top 100. The list will consist of men's players drawn from L'Equipe and France Football journalists. Also those from the Balon D'or ambassador Didier Drogba would also be added to the list. That is the best mens player for the under 21 category (The Kopa) as well as the best mens goalkeeper known as the (Yashin).
MAJOR TALKING POINTS
1. It sounds much better to now determine the winner from August through to July. Instead of determining it on a calendar year basis. Basically it will make the footballers raise their game, meaning there would be competition right from the word go. Some players normally dont give their best of, until the calendar year starts in January.
2. Previously it was based on which player won the most prestigious award and looking at a players career. Lionel Messi winning the award , was obviously because of his triumph in the Copa America. One can assume looking at his career that was one of the two trophies he had not won in his life with the other being the World Cup. So he was selected based on that criteria. Now it based on who has contributed immensely to his team, who has shown good sportsmanship and individual collective performance.
3. Voting is now going to take place with FIFA''s top ranked 100 countries. As opposed to the previous version were votes were made by over 100 countries. Is this good? Well neutrals might not agree on this, cause it means some countries dont have their say on the votes. The upside to it is that 100 is a wide sample size to choose a winner from. For those who do research they can attest to that.
