Real Madrid has made Reece James, a Chelsea player, a priority target in the summer
Real Madrid have placed Chelsea defender Reece James at the top of their transfer wishlist as they seek a new right-back this summer.
According to Defensa Central, Real Madrid have identified Chelsea star Reece James as their top target in the upcoming transfer window to strengthen the right-back position.
James is a Chelsea youth academy product. After an impressive loan spell with Wigan Athletic during the 2018/19 season, the youngster made his Blues debut in 2019. Since then, the 22-year-old has been a mainstay on the pitch for the west London club, appearing in 114 games and scoring nine goals 15 assists.
James, a modern-day full-back, has proven to be a capable attacking outlet on the right flank, as well as a confident and dependable defender. These characteristics were on display this season when Real Madrid faced Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. The England international performed admirably in the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Real Madrid has had their eye on James for some time. After seeing him in action at the Bernabeu earlier this week, the Spanish giants are convinced that the Chelsea defender is the right man for the job as they look to strengthen their options at right-back.
Real Madrid currently has Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez as choices in the right-sided full-back slot. The former has struggled with fitness issues and has been unable to perform at his peak, whereas the latter is a stopgap solution in the position.
Despite the fact that they recently signed Vinicius Tobias from Shakhtar Donetsk, he will most likely start for Real Madrid Castilla. As a result, the La Liga leaders must sign a new right-back this summer. According to the report, they appear to have identified James as their top priority for the position.
Signing the England international, however, could be a difficult task given how highly he is regarded at Chelsea. Furthermore, James' contract with his childhood club is set to expire in the summer of 2025. So Chelsea has a firm grip on the of the situation and are unlikely to play ball if Real Madrid make an approach for the 22-year-old.
