Fruits are an essential component of a healthy diet due to their high content of minerals, vitamins and fibers. Banana a very important fruit is grown in about 150 countries with 105 million tons of this fruit being produced each year. Banana is ranked as the third healthiest food and is consumed daily as compared to other fruits either eaten raw or cooked according to a report by Business Mirror. There are over 1000 varieties of bananas worldwide; this may come out as a shock. The name banana is derived from the Arab language meaning fingers but it is credited to Africans. The most commercialized variety is the Musa Cavendish. The other large variety group is the popular plantain. Banana is available all through the year and this makes it loved by many. Banana is mostly eaten raw but can also be eaten fried and is used as a derivative of flavor in cakes, muffins, pancakes or bread. Here are some nutritional benefits of bananas; 1. Energy booster: Banana has a high sugar content and more calories. The sugars in bananas namely glucose sucrose and fructose enhance the supply of energy boosters to the body. They are also rich in potassium which reduces cramping during exercise. 2. Good for the heart: Potassium is good for the heart and regulates blood pressure. A medium-sized banana produces around 320-400mg of potassium and this amounts to about 10% of the potassium a body needs daily. 3. Good for the skin: Nutrients in banana ( potassium and manganese ) enhances beauty by making the skin soft and providing brightness to the skin. Consuming bananas also moisturizes dehydrated skin. Vitamin E in bananas protects the skin from ultraviolet damage and slows down the aging of the skin. Banana peels can be used as a blemish remover and treat acne when used alone or with sugar by rubbing on the affected area. 4. Banana boosts hair growth and fights dandruff. 5. Banana is said to produce sex hormones and improve sex drive due to its high potassium content. Banana also contains has an enzyme known as bromelain which increases blood flow and libido.
