Cristiano Ronaldo and his partner Georgina Rodriguez, who announced they were expecting twins in October of last year, have revealed that one of the two kids has died.
"It is with great grief that we must announce the passing of our baby child," Ronaldo and Rodriguez stated in a joint statement on social media. "It is the most agonizing pain a parent can experience."
"Only our baby girl's birth has given us the strength to survive this moment with some hope and happiness," they stated.
The pair thanked the doctors and nurses for their exceptional care and support, but asked for privacy during this difficult time.
Ronaldo, a five-time world player of the year, returned to Manchester United last year after winning many trophies with the club.
