According to Dr Jerry Nboyine of the CSIR-Savanna Agriculture Research Institute (SARI), the rate of cowpea production and planted area has decreased in Ghana during the last ten years owing to insect infestation.

Pest infestation, he claims, has deterred many cowpea farmers from cultivating the crop in the nation, noting that pest infestation has made cowpea cultivation both unappealing and expensive, causing many cowpea farmers to shift their emphasis to other crops.

On the sidelines of a one-day sensitisation workshop organised by OFAB-Ghana chapter for select workers of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) in Accra on April 11, 2022, Dr Jerry Nboyine said this in an interview with Graphic Online.

The goal of the workshop was to clarify the operations of Genetically Modified (GM) technology in the United States.
