Why did Jorginho yell at Reece James as Thomas Tuchel prepares for the Chelsea vs Arsenal match?
Chelsea qualified for their third consecutive FA Cup final with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at Wembley thanks to goals from Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mason Mount.
Tuchel maintains his cup winning streak.
It's easy to forget that Thomas Tuchel has only been Chelsea's manager for 15 months. There has been a lot that has transpired in that time – more than many head coaches see in their whole careers – but the 48-year-old has remained a reassuring, confident, and influential presence both on and off the field.
Tuchel could concentrate on what he does best against Crystal Palace: coaching. In the first half, he saw his team struggle to break down the Eagles and spent much of the first 45 minutes jotting notes. And the tactical change he made at halftime, switching to a 3-5-2 formation with Mason Mount and Ruben Loftus-Cheek playing as eights behind Jorginho, paid off with the two academy graduates scoring. Tuchel's 2-0 victory maintained his incredible record of never losing a semi-final; the German has now advanced from eleven of them, whether over two legs or in a single knockout game. In less than 18 months, he has also reached his sixth final with Chelsea, an astounding achievement.
Tuchel told Chelsea's in-house reporters after the game, "To play in a final is extremely fantastic." "The days leading up to the day, and the day itself. When you're under strain and anxiety, it's not always pleasant, but in general, it's fantastic. It's something I don't want to get used to. I still think it's unique, and I'm grateful for a second FA Cup final."
Tuchel was unable to lead the Blues to victory in the FA Cup final last season, as Leicester City won 1-0. This time, Liverpool will stand between Chelsea and their third trophy of the season, and that will not be easy.
The revitalization of Werner continues.
When it came to selecting his team for yesterday's semi-final, Tuchel had a few difficult decisions to make. Despite the thrashing of Southampton last weekend and the outstanding performance against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night, his attack has stepped up.
As a result, Kai Havertz had to start all over again. Mount as well. Timo Werner, who has had the most unexpected of Chelsea career revivals this month, completed the trifecta once more. The Germans' tenure at Stamford Bridge appeared to be drawing to a close. His performances were dreadful, and his self-assurance was shattered. A summer exit, possibly to a Bundesliga team, seems inescapable.
Werner, on the other hand, thrived when he was thrown into the team to face Southampton. He added a goal and an assist to his tally. He reappeared in the picture and retained his position against Real Madrid. The fact that he scored Chelsea's third goal of the night – and appeared to be the Blues' hero for a little time - was as surprising as it was thrilling. Werner was given space to exploit by Southampton and, to a lesser extent, Real Madrid. At Wembley, there was very little of that against Crystal Palace. Patrick Vieira changed his team's formation to 3-5-2 and tried to shut off Chelsea from every angle. The question was whether Wermer could still make an impact.
He struggled in the first period. Many of Werner's Chelsea teammates felt the same way.
Werner continued to burst into spaces that opened up after the intermission, frequently without reward. He did, however, have an impact on the game, as it was his clever pass to Mount that allowed him to get into the Palace penalty area and score. Later, the 26-year-old set up Romelu Lukaku for a glorious opportunity, but the Belgian struck the post from six yards out.
When asked about Werner's performance at Wembley, Tuchel replied, "The players take care of their place in the team." "It was difficult for him to find space and make decisions today, but he assisted on the second goal. Timo is a big part of the team right now, and he's making sure he stays in it."
Werner will undoubtedly hope that this is the case in the coming weeks. Chelsea still has a number of important Premier League games ahead of them, beginning with Arsenal's visit to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night. It's taken considerably longer than expected, but the German may have finally found his feet and will be crucial for the Blues in the remaining months of the season.
