After being raped twice as a soldier in the US military, veteran Marquete Harris speaks about her military trauma. Almost one in every four American servicewomen claims to have been sexually assaulted while serving in the military. Why has it been so difficult to change the culture, and why are there so many unpunished attacks in the US military?
Her dream, she said, was to be a military woman, and when she joined the military after high school, something happened that will haunt her for the rest of her life. She describes how a senior military officer tracked her down to her chamber, bound her, and raped her. " Before going anywhere, he urged me to clean up my act, and he stood there until I had a shower." She expressed herself.
Marqueta told her pals about the incident the next morning. They responded, "Let it go," because the cop was a high-ranking official who couldn't be held accountable for his actions. Marquette's problems, on the other hand, were far from done. A lieutenant sexually attacked her later that night.
She claimed she was assaulted in her bedroom by a lieutenant, who raped her and knocked her out. "It was excruciatingly painful because he tore my clothes and raped me in the restroom." She stated her case. She said that her life and dream had been shattered, and that she couldn't get the images of those traumatic events out of her mind after being diagnosed with depression.
She claimed she was unable to cope with the trauma and withdrew, losing her appetite and self-esteem. She contemplating suicide, but one of her unit's officers observed her and referred her to counseling, where she was diagnosed with PTSD. She claims she considers suicide every day because she feels destroyed and less of a woman every time she recalls being beaten, coerced, slapped, and physically mistreated.
Marquette left the military after her recovery and established a new profession. She believes that many military men and women suffer from stress and depression in silence for fear of losing their family's source of income if they report their condition. She claims she can't stop thinking about suicide and that the trauma has caused her sadness and suicidal thoughts.
