The human body loses fluids as we sweat, during bowels, and also during urine. To replenish lost energy sports athletes normally take in these sports drinks, which contain sucrose, carbohydrates, glucose, and a whole lot.
These drinks come in two forms the regular sports drink which is high in sugar, and then the zero-low calories drinks which contain artificial sweeteners.
Drinking a regular sports drink can be done after a strenuous workout of about 45 minutes or more. Or they can be consumed in extremely hot conditions. eg of regular sports drinks are Powerade, Gatorade, and so on.
The regular sports drink contains lots of sugar. This level of sugar is said to be just 5grams lesser than a bottle of coke. So basically diseases like diabetes or heart issues can occur.
Also, the zero-low calorie drinks can be taken if you trying to lose weight. The zero-low calorie can be used as a substitute for water. Meaning for those athletes working 45 minutes or below. These zero-low calorie drinks are said to cause diarrhea. eg of zero-low calorie drinks are the Powerade zero and so on. But to be honest each individual's body is different.
According to research the best time to drink water for athletes is when their workout sessions are below 45 minutes.
This could be because water does not contain all these vitamins as these products do. That's why you see most athletes opting for these sports drinks or a substitute. The substitute could be fruits or vegetables.
Truth be told drinking water will do the trick just as these drinks will do. So the question is are these drinks made for revenue gain or branding?
Gatorade, Powerade, and so on are well commercialized and research is done on these drinks to ensure they are safe to drink. What makes them attractive to buy, is the form of color they come in, as well as the taste.

Water has no taste, but still does a good job in helping an athlete perform wonders. Water is essential right before a workout. This may sound weird, but too much water is not good for the body. When the level of water in a human body in relation to your salt level is higher, it can cause brain or nervous system damage.

Everyone has a desired preference. So experts will tell you to go for what works best for you.
