The veteran forward reflects on the situation surrounding his removal as Black Stars captain ahead of Afcon 2019.

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has revealed that losing the captaincy to Andre Ayew ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations left him feeling "betrayed."

About six months before the continental showpiece in Egypt, Ghana was embroiled in a controversy when then-head coach James Kwasi Appiah switched the leadership of the Black Stars, forcing the disgruntled Gyan to prematurely end his international career.

However, the veteran striker changed his mind in time to join the team for the tournament, in which the Stars were eliminated in the Round of 16.

"I felt betrayed when the captaincy was stripped from me because people who know what happened will tell you that they know I was betrayed; that's all I can say," Gyan, who is currently unattached, told Asaase FM.

Following their qualification for the World Cup in Qatar later this year, Ghana has been linked with a number of players, the majority of whom are based abroad, who could be included in the trip for the November 21-December 18 gathering.

Gyan, on the other hand, has cautioned the Black Stars' current officials to be wary of new additions to the team.

"The same thing happened to my brother [Baffour Gyan]." He played 90% of the qualifiers in 2006 [when Ghana qualified for the World Cup for the first time], and then they brought strikers who had never played a game [for the tournament in Germany]. "He was on the standby [list]," the 36-year-old explained.

"That's when my brother quit football." He's not a football fan, he doesn't watch it, he doesn't like it; he's purely a businessman. People must be treated fairly at times." No player wants to be [left out], especially after having played all of the games. When these players arrive, they do not play a single game. They simply sit on the bench, collect their bonuses, and leave; they do not compete."

"If they bring these players, they have to show us something, they have to prove to people that they deserve to be on the team, and that's all I ask." "We all want the national team to improve."

Gyan is Ghana's all-time leading scorer and most-capped player, having last played for the Black Stars in the 2019 Afcon finals.
