After receiving a bomb threat, Cheshire police with sniffer dogs were dispatched to Manchester United captain Harry Maguire's home.
Maguire lives with his fiancee Fern Hawkins and their two daughters, but their home is being examined thoroughly by police as a result of the threat.
An email was sent claiming that a bomb had been planted at the England international's residence.
The player, like any other high-profile footballer, is frequently the target of extensive abuse and threats on social media sites, but the nature of this threat has compelled the authorities to take action.
It comes just days after United's poor form was highlighted by a four-goal loss to Liverpool at Anfield.
The threat has startled Maguire and his young family, according to a report in The Sun.
The central defense has often taken the brunt of the attacks.
Manchester United and the Cheshire Police have been contacted for comment by Mirror Football.
The event occurred on the same day that Manchester United announced Ajax manager Erik ten Hag as their new permanent manager, effective at the end of the current season.
Ten Hag, 52, met with United executives last month to discuss becoming the club's new permanent manager, and has now signed a deal that runs through June 2025, with a one-year extension option.

Ten Hag told United's website : “It is a great honour to be appointed manager of Manchester United and I am hugely excited by the challenge ahead. I know the history of this great club and the passion of the fans, and I am absolutely determined to develop a team capable of delivering the success they deserve. “It will be difficult to leave Ajax after these incredible years, and I can assure our fans of my complete commitment and focus on bringing this season to a successful conclusion before I move to Manchester United.” Ten Hag will succeed interim coach Ralf Rangnick in the Old Trafford hotseat and will become the club's fifth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013, following on from David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
"It is a great pleasure to be chosen manager of Manchester United, and I am hugely delighted about the job ahead," Ten Hag said on United's website.
I am well-versed in the history of this great club as well as the passion of its supporters, and I am motivated to build a team capable of delivering the results they deserve.
"Leaving Ajax after these amazing years will be difficult, but I can guarantee our fans that I will give everything I have to bring this season to a triumphant conclusion before moving to Manchester United."
Ten Hag will take over the Old Trafford hotseat from interim coach Ralf Rangnick, becoming the club's seventh permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure in 2013.
