The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) administration has stated why they asked over 6,000 students to defer their courses.
They claim that some of the students who are affected are playing games with them.
According to the University's Public Relations Officer, Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, some students have invested their fees in businesses such as betting, purchasing automobiles for online ride-hailing services, and running a bakery.
"Right present, we have an issue with a few students who are playing games with the University." For example, people use their school tuition to buy Uber vehicles, others use it to open bakeries, and yet others use it for betting, all of which we have proof of."
"Some parents have even sent us audio of pupils receiving tuition but refusing to pay or simply swapping the money," says one parent.
In an interview with Emefa Apawu on Joy FM's Midday News on Wednesday, Dr. Bekoe stated this.
The KNUST had previously issued a press statement informing students who owed more than 70% of their school fees by April 7 that they would be automatically deferred. The admonition, however, had no effect at that time.
Students were able to participate in the mid-semester exams, which began on April 11, according to reports.
Students who were still behind in their classes were forced to defer their classes.
However, after the situation became public, numerous Ghanaians have expressed differing viewpoints.
Dr. Bekoe, on the other hand, emphasized that the University's actions are correct.
He noted that the problem of students failing to pay fees has persisted over time, necessitating the need to "apply the fees policy this year, which has been approved by the academic board, and it is required that as an undergraduate student, you must register for your courses at the beginning of the semester and pay 70% of the fees."
Meanwhile, he claims the university has "opened a window" from February through March and April for students who had arrears to pay.
