Mwai Kibaki, Kenya's former president, has died at the age of 90, according to President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Since independence, his victory in 2002 brought an end to 40 years of one-party rule.
His re-election in 2007 provoked months of countrywide rioting, resulting in 1,200 fatalities.
President Kenyatta, who lost to Mr Kibaki in 2002, led the homage, saying he had "lead the effort to hold the governing party responsible."
The president went on to say that Mr Kibaki had "won the nation's undying respect and devotion."
Mr Kenyatta ordered a period of mourning, with flags flying at half-mast, until Mr Kibaki's funeral. President Kenyatta said that he will be accorded a state funeral with full military honours.
Many Kenyans are mourning Mr. Kenyatta and hold him in high respect.
