SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv will be counting down the days until the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which will take place from November 21 to December 18 and will be the most exciting rendition of 'The Beautiful Game' ever seen.Qatar 2022 will be the first World Cup to be hosted not just in the Middle East, but also in the Northern Hemisphere's winter months of November and December (the tournament has always been held in the summer months of June and July in the past).
This means that major European leagues such as the Premier League, La Liga, and Serie A will be halted during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, resulting in significant adjustments to their schedules for the following season. The 2022 World Cup kicks off on November 21st, with the Premier League scheduled to be stopped a week prior. Matchday 16 will be the penultimate round of matches before the break, with games scheduled for November 12th and 13th. Then, on Monday, November 14th, the call-up period will commence, during which international managers will pick their squads. The season will be temporarily shifted to accommodate the event, with the first day being planned for August 6th instead of August 6th.
The 2022 World Cup final will be held on Sunday, December 18th, and Premier League players will have little time to heal before the start of the 2022-23 season on Boxing Day, December 26th.
The Premier League season will end on May 28th, one day later than usual, due to the aforementioned modification. Other leagues that run from August to May are expected to follow the Premier League's schedule. In order to accommodate the World Cup, the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and UEFA Europa Conference League will all have their timetables changed. For example, the Champions League's qualifying rounds will be completed by the end of August, while the group stage will take place from September 6-7 to November 1-2.
After the World Cup, the knockout phase of the competition will resume as usual in February 2023, however the final will only be held on June 10, 2023 (with the Conference League final on June 7 and the Europa League final on May 31).
