Marriage is a union between a man and a woman who have gone through all the recognized rites and norms in a society and recognized them accordingly to live as man and wife. In some cases it may also be a union between two people of the same genders which is most very uncommon to see due to the societal backlash generates.
A Dowry on the other hand is a gift usually given to the brides family either by the groom or his family to their Inlaw’s to show appreciation for allowing their son to Mary their daughter. However in some tribes and cultures mostly in Asia and the Australia and in some few remote communities in Africa women do pay the groom price ( dowry) of their potential spouses.
Let us look at a few of such countries where women pay the dowry of their husbands in other to Marry them and why such cultures are allowed since it may sound weird to people of different cultures.
1.India is one such country that practices this culture which they have passed on from generations to their present offsprings . A woman ready to marry her fiancé is often expected to provide a cow or a mini car as dowry to her fiancé’s parents.
2.In Nepal, it is the bride who is made to pay the groom price as it is said to be a key factor in giving them a successful marriage and also coordinates the woman’s character towards her husband.
3.Kenya is also one of the African countries that practiced this system of marriage and dowry payment . The bride is made to present the dowry either in cash or in kind to her husband’s father on the day of their traditional marriage.
Many people also claim it doesn’t necessarily mean the woman must provide that money as most husbands give them the money in closed doors if they do not have enough to present in order to speed up the marriage process.
4.In some cultures in Sri Lanka, the woman finds her potential soul mate and goes ahead to inform her parents about her marriage intentions. Her parents visits his house and if an agreement is met, the brides family pays the dowry to the groom’s family and a day is set for their marriage.
