Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by a yeast (a type of fungus) called Candida. Some species of Candida can cause infection in people; the most common is Candida albicans. Candida normally lives on the skin and inside the body, in places such as the mouth, throat, gut, and vagina, without causing any problems. Candida can cause infections if it grows out of control.
Three out of four adult women will get at least one yeast infection during their lifetime. This happens when too much yeast grows in the vagina. (Men also can get a genital yeast infection, but it's much less common).
A yeast infection typically happens when the balance in the vagina changes. This can be caused by:
Pregnancy
Diabetes
Some medicines, including antibiotics and birth control pills
Use of some douches, vaginal sprays, lubricants, or spermicides
A weakened immune system
Wearing a wet bathing suit or workout clothes, or underwear that doesn’t breathe
The symptoms can include:
An itchy sensation in the vagina and vulva.
A thick, white vaginal discharge with the consistency of cottage cheese.
Redness and swelling of the vagina and vulva.
Small cuts or tiny cracks in the skin of the vulva because of friable skin in the area.
Yeast infection can be prevented as follows:
Wear breathable underwear. Cotton is your best choice. It doesn’t hold onto heat or moisture. It will help keep you dry.
Avoid hot tubs and extra hot baths. Hot and damp are never your friends.
When on your period, change your tampons, pads, and panty liners often
And lastly, Use antibiotics only when you have to. You don’t need them for conditions like a cold, because they don’t do anything against a virus. If you don't have to, don't take them.
