According to reports, Liverpool and Darwin Nez have reached an agreement
Liverpool have reportedly agreed on personal terms with Benfica striker Darwen Nez ahead of a possible summer signing.
What's the most recent news?
According to online sources (via Sports Illustrated), his agent Jorge Mendes has been turning down offers from other potential suitors because the player wants to join Liverpool on verbal terms.
The Uruguayan is valued at £36 million and, following a successful season, has piqued the interest of several top clubs. He is currently paid £31k per week at Benfica, which would increase to £60k per week if he joins the Reds.
Klopp will be ecstatic.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will be overjoyed to learn that Nez is reportedly one step closer to joining the Reds. Reds have much-improved squad depth this season which has been one of the reasons they have reached the latter stages of every competition.
The club is still chasing the quadruple after winning the Carabao Cup, and they are now in the final of the FA Cup, the semi-final of the Champions League, and the title is down to the wire.
It is, however, never too early to begin planning for the next campaign, and Nez would be an excellent addition. This season, the 22-year-old has an outstanding goal scoring record, with 25 league goals in 26 appearances.
The "special" striker's form hasn't been enough to propel Benfica to the league title, with the club currently sitting third in the table and no guarantees of Champions League football next season.
If they fail to qualify for Europe's top competition, Nez will be even more likely to leave the club, and with Merseyside looking like the most likely destination, it shouldn't be long before we see him in the Premier League.
When compared to Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota, and Sadio Mane, the three Liverpool players who typically play through the middle, he has a much higher goal per 90-minute average of 1.25.
Jota is the player closest to him, with a score of 0.70. While the Premier League is undoubtedly a more difficult league, we believe he will adjust quickly, and given the number of chances Liverpool create, it would not be surprising to see him get close to those numbers.
