Real Madrid Signs Antonio Rudiger on a Four-Year Contract
Real Madrid have reportedly reached a verbal agreement on a lucrative four-year contract with Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger ahead of a summer move.
As a Bosman move in the summer approaches, Chelsea defensive mainstay Antonio Rudiger has verbally agreed to a four-year contract with La Liga giants Real Madrid, according to Nizaar Kinsella of Goal.com.
Rudiger, who joined Chelsea from AS Roma in 2017, is in his fifth season with the club. The 29-year-old defender has emerged as a key member of Chelsea's first-team setup, especially since Thomas Tuchel took over the club from Frank Lampard last year.
Rudiger has been in sensational form for Chelsea, playing a key role in the club's success they achieved over the past 15 months. For his aggressive, no-nonsense performances and leadership on and off the field, the German international has become a cult hero among his fans.
Rudiger's time at Stamford Bridge, however, will come to an end this summer. With his contract coming to an end, rumors about his departure have been circulating for months. After failing to reach an agreement on a new contract, the 29-year-old has decided to leave, as Tuchel confirmed on Sunday.
Rudiger had piqued the interest of a slew of elite European clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG, Bayern Munich, Juventus, and Manchester United.
However, for a long time, Real Madrid appeared to have the upper hand in the race to sign Rudiger. According to the most recent reports, a move is all but confirmed. According to GOAL, the Chelsea defender has reached a verbal agreement with Real Madrid on a lucrative four-year contract.
While there is no mention of Rudiger's exact salary, it is expected to be significantly higher than the £200,000 per week deal that Chelsea was offering him.
Real Madrid required defensive reinforcements after losing both Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos last summer. This season, David Alaba has performed admirably alongside Eder Militao. Beyond them, however, there is a distinct lack of quality in the centre-back position. To that end, Rudiger's impending signing will help manager address the issue.
Fabrizio Romano, a reliable transfer expert, has also confirmed the news of a verbal agreement between Rudiger and Real Madrid, with the move all but completed. Real Madrid appear to have pulled off the same trick with Rudiger as they did with Alaba in a Bosman deal last summer.
