Nigerian officials claim they detained a suspected drug trafficker onboard a plane at Lagos' major airport, describing him as a millionaire drug lord.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Government stated in a statement that investigations had identified Chief Afam Ukatu as a significant importer of huge quantities of Tramadol, an opioid painkiller classified as illegal by the agency.
The arrest took place on April 13th, although it was just revealed on Monday.
Mr Ukatu's whereabouts and response to the allegations are unknown.
The arrest came after months of monitoring and dodging arrest, according to the agency. Mr. Ukatu is accused of running pharmaceutical and plastic manufacturing firms, which he "used as a cover to import illegal pharmaceuticals into Nigeria."
"This is on top of maintaining 103 bank accounts, the majority of which are used to launder money," according to the agency.
