The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has urged everyone to join forces to improve the West African Sub-democratic Region's foundations.

This is in the wake of military coups in Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso. In Guinea Bissau, there was also a failed coup d'etat.

Ms. Josephine Nkrumah, the Commission's Chairperson, stated that government institutions, security agencies, the media, traditional and religious leaders, and traditional and religious leaders all needed to work together to safeguard and maintain democracy, which was under attack.

According to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the commission would expand its public education effort to assist everyone in upholding and defending the country's constitution.  Citizens should not take the country's democracy for granted, she said, adding that government legitimacy was the most important factor in ensuring that citizens continued to enjoy the core human rights and other rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

"Ghanaians must see defending the Constitution as a responsibility at all times; the safeguarding of democratic government is a duty call to everyone, regardless of party membership."

According to the NCCE Chairperson, programs would be implemented to help Ghanaians become more conscious of their civic responsibilities, rights, and obligations.

The Annual Democracy Lecture, Citizenship Week, Constitution Week, the Ghana Constitution Game/Quiz Competition, Social Auditing Programs, Community Durbars, Dialogue Series, and Civic Education Clubs will all take place in the coming months.

She explained that their Annual Democracy Lecture provided a chance for all Ghanaians to reflect on how far the country had progressed in its democratic path.

It was an opportunity to examine the issues and agree on a path ahead, strengthening the people's commitment to maintain national stability in the process.
