Accra has been designated as the 2023 UNESCO World Book Capital, according to Daniel Ofosu-Asamoah, literacy promotion manager for the Ghana Book Development Council (GBDC).

The designation is intended to encourage the local book business, libraries, books, reading, literacy awareness, and a vibrant book culture, as well as attract national and international attention to the city's and country's literary legacy.

Ghana's hosting of the World Book Capital in 2023, he claims, will help people recognize the benefits of reading, particularly students, by changing their perspectives.

On Monday, April 25, 2022, at Omanye Aba Hall in Accra, he delivered this declaration during the commemoration of World Book and Copyright Day.

Every year, member states of the United Nations (UN) commemorate World Book and Copyright Day, which is organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to encourage reading, publishing, and copyright.

The focus of the event was "mind development through reading."
