Ghana's first president, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, passed away 50 years ago today.
Kwame Nkrumah passed away on April 27, 1972, after a long battle with cancer. When Dr. Nkrumah died, he was 62 years old.
His final breath was not taken in the country he battled to free from British colonial oppression. Kwame Nkrumah died in the Romanian capital of Bucharest.
On February 24, 1966, Dr. Nkrumah was deposed by a coup led by Col. Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka. When his administration was thrown into oblivion, he was out of the country.
He had been living in Guinea since the coup. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was also the first Prime Minister of Ghana.
The United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), sometimes known as the "Big Six," had Kwame Nkrumah as one of its founding fathers.
Ebenezer Ako-Adjei, Edward Akufo-Addo, Joseph Boakye Danquah, Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey, and William Ofori-Atta are the other members of the Big Six.
Today is the 50th anniversary of Nkrumah's death, and social media users have praised him for his achievements.
