Ralf Rangnick has suggested that Manchester United players vote for the club's captain if Harry Maguire loses the armband next season under Erik ten Hag.
Rangnick indicated at a press conference prior to his team's match against Chelsea that if the new coach determines that a new captain is required, the players should vote for a new captain in the German manner.
Maguire's poor play this season, along with recent injury difficulties, has spurred calls for his leadership to be revoked, and the Englishman may even leave the club. Three capable players that potentially step in for the England international are listed below:
Bruno Fernandes is a Brazilian actor.
Bruno Fernandes isn't having his best season, but no player has been more consistent in terms of output during his time at the club.
When Maguire hasn't been able to play, the Portuguese midfielder has stepped in as captain, which might help him acquire valuable experience.
Even when he isn't wearing the armband, he is regarded as the team's leader, and he looks to have formed a solid bond with the rest of the squad over his two years on the team.
David De Gea is a goalkeeper.
Only Phil Jones has played for Manchester United for as long as David de Gea, who signed in the summer of 2011 and has probably been the club's greatest player since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure.
De Gea has donned the armband on a few times in the past, but goalkeepers rarely do so on a regular basis, which might work against him.
There are also doubts about De Gea's future under Ten Hag, who is likely to prefer a goalkeeper who can play with his feet, and De Gea's long-term future is uncertain.
Raphael Varane,
Raphael Varane is the most decorated player in the group, except from Cristiano Ronaldo, who may leave in the summer if Manchester United qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
The France international has won it all, both at club and at the international level, and a captain with that kind of experience is invaluable.
However, he has missed much of this season due to injury, which could be a long-term issue.
