A member of the Keta Municipal Assembly, Geoffrey James Ocloo, and a tanker driver are being held by the Keta Police Command for their roles in the diversion of a tanker carrying premix gasoline intended for fisherman in the Keta municipality.
The goods was supposed to go to the Nukpesekope Landing Beach Committee (LBC), but it was reportedly diverted to Afife, some 30 kilometers from Keta, and offloaded onto another truck.
Community of Keta
Fishermen in Keta and the surrounding fishing settlements have been complained about a paucity of premix gasoline for their boats in recent months, and have suspected product diversion
The tanker, with registration number GT 2254 Z, carried the goods to Nukpesekope, but did not discharge the fuel as promised, according to a member of the Keta Vigilante Group.
The vehicle then proceeded along Afiadenyigba to Afife Road, where it was witnessed transferring the premix gasoline into another truck after a short delay.
He stated that a report was filed to the Keta Police Command at Afife in the Volta Region's Ketu North Municipal Assembly.
Diversion
According to the source, a comprehensive investigation by the police revealed that the waybill had been doctored by the Nukpesekope LBC Secretary, Mr Ocloo, to reflect that it was intended for a different designation.
He added the vehicle carrying the allegedly diverted premix gasoline had been returned to the Keta Police Command for investigation and probable arrest of people responsible for "the black market operations in premix fuel in the Keta Municipal Assembly."
When contacted, Emmanuel Gemega, the Keta Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), expressed surprise at the turn of events, saying he learned of the alleged diversion and arrest of two others from the Commander of the Keta Police Division, Chief Supt. Leonard Abaka, while on official duty in Accra last Tuesday.
Mr. Gemega, who is also the Chairman of the Municipal Security Council, told the Daily Graphic that he had instructed the Commander to conduct the appropriate investigations.
