Jurgen Klopp's current contract at Anfield was set to expire in two years; Liverpool's owners stepped up talks to extend his contract after positive noises from the German's camp; the new contract comes as Klopp remains on track for a historic quadruple;
Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, has signed a new two-year contract extension at Anfield.
The German had two years left on his current contract and had previously stated that he would leave at the end of it – but he is now set to stay until at least the summer of 2026.
In addition to Klopp's new contract, the Reds have confirmed that assistant managers Pep Ljinders and Peter Krawietz have signed new contracts with the Merseyside club. There had been some concern that Ljinders might take over management himself, but those fears have now been allayed.
Mike Gordon, president of the Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which owns Liverpool, managed to fly in for Wednesday's Champions League semi-final against Villarreal, with one of his top priorities being to discuss a contract extension with Klopp.
Marc Kosicke, the 54-year-agent, old's was also at Anfield for the first leg on Wednesday night and sat a few seats away from Gordon, and led the talks following positive noises from Klopp's camp.
Klopp, who has been in charge since 2015, is on track to win an unprecedented quadruple this season after a 2-0 win over Villarreal at Anfield, which puts them in strong contention to reach a third Champions League final in 4 years.
His team will also face Chelsea in the FA Cup final next month, and they are a point underneath Premier League leaders Manchester City with five games remaining after winning the League Cup in February.
In his seven years at the club, the German manager has won five trophies, including that of the Premier League 2019/20 title and the Champions League in 2019.
The focus of talent management over the next two summer windows will most likely be on refreshing the squad after key players have already secured long-term contracts renewals.
Klopp: I love our club, it's the best place to be Jurgen Klopp, manager of Liverpool FC, speaking to Liverpoolfc.com:
"I have something to say. As with the last time, some will like it, while others will dislike it. If you don't like it, stop watching it right now.
"I'll be here for another two years." It's not just me! No, all of my coaches, which is actually the most important.
"Why?" is the new question... because Ulla wishes to remain! What do you do as a good husband when your wife wants to stay? You're staying. That is not the only reason, but it is one of them.
"You know, I really enjoy our club; it's the best place to be." I consider myself extremely fortunate. What exactly is it now? FSG considered it would be a good idea to bring in a German guy six and a half years ago, and here we are. We'll stay for another two hours, making it four in total from now on.
"Wow! In football, that's a long time. I hope we all have a good time together. "I'll see you soon..."
