Despite the lifting of COVID-19 limitations, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), has urged Ghanaians to continue wearing nose masks.

Despite the fact that the country was seeing fewer new COVID-19 cases, he said Ghanaians "must not reduce their guard, because the illness is still with us."

Dr. Kuma-Aboagye made the announcement on Tuesday during the Ministry of Information's bi-weekly Minister's Briefing in Accra.

The health officials' briefing is the first since the President eased COVID-19 limitations nearly four weeks ago.

Even though President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated that wearing a nasal mask is not necessary, Dr Kuma-Aboagye believes it is important for Ghanaians to continue to do so for their own safety.

People who visit or congregate in enclosed or congested settings, he said, must wear a nasal mask to avoid catching the sickness.

This was necessary, according to Dr. Kuma-Aboagye, because the sickness existed, and he said, "At this moment, it is important that we all guard against rising infections in the country."

He stated the country was currently seeing a low number of COVID-19 infections, with less than 20 instances reported daily.

There were no active cases in 12 regions, according to Dr. Kuma-Aboagye. There hasn't been a single severe or catastrophic case across the country.

He said that since the country's land borders were opened, the number of instances among 'foreign newcomers' had decreased significantly.

"Over 14 million COVID-19 immunization doses were provided, resulting in lower vaccination uptake and vaccine hesitancy," Dr Kuma-Aboagye added.  Concerning the COVID-19 situation in the country, he stated that as of April 23, this year, the total number of confirmed cases was 161,172, with 2,435,606 tests completed.

Dr. Kuma-Aboagye said that 159,679 people had recovered and that 40 people had died.
