Dutch born Barcelona forward of Ghanaian descent Memphis Depay decline the call to switch nationality to represent the Black Stars of Ghana.
The 28-year-old striker was born in Moordrecht in Netherlands to a Ghanaian Dad, Dennis Depay and a Dutch mother Cora Schensema.
Officials of the Ghana Football Association have been in various conversations with foreign based players of Ghanaian background to get them switch allegiance to play for the Black Stars ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year.
Key among them are Callum Hudson-Odoi of Chelsea FC, Crystal Palace's Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, Arsenal's Eddie Nketiah, Einctracht Frankfurt's Ansgar Knauff, Brighton and Hove Albion's Tariq Lamptey and Athletico Bilbao's Inaki Williams and Nico Williams.
According to unofficial information available, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Eddie Nketiah have began processes to acquire Ghanaian passports while parents of Inaki Williams and Nico Williams have agreed for their children to switch allegiance to play for the Black Stars.
Memphis Depay turned down an approach by the Ghana Football Association to have him change nationality and named in the list of the Black Stars due to his Dad's irresponsibility.
"I will never forgive him. Don't call me Depay, call me Memphis. No I don't want to explain exactly what happened at home because I don't want to make people feel ashamed and that is how it will remain because I have already moved on", he said in an interview with BBC back in 2021 on whether he will reconsider playing for the Black Stars.
Memphis Depay was in Ghana for a charity program organized by his foundation. His charity program donated items to needy educational facilities in the Central and other Regions of the country.
Depay made a shocking revelation that his father neglected him and his mother leaving the mother to take care of him alone and promised not to forgive his Dad.
Memphis Depay has made several appearances for the Netherlands national team at various levels.
The Ghana Black Stars of Ghana has qualified for the 2022 World Cup expected to be hosted by Qatar later this year. The team will again play the 2023 AFCON qualifiers, friendly matches and a mini tournament all in preparation for the World football campaign.
The Black Stars have been grouped with Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay in the group H.
