Indeed, a crude storage tank of the Pérenco oil company, more precisely the R17 tank, gave way by spilling 90,000 m3 of oil, or approximately 565,000 barrels in the terminal area.
Indeed, a crude storage tank of the Pérenco oil company, more precisely the R17 tank, gave way by spilling 90,000 m3 of oil, or approximately 565,000 barrels in the terminal area.
According to sources close to the oil company contacted by the editorial staff of Direct Info, the situation is under control. Large-scale pollution risks would be contained.
<<The ferry that gave way is far from the sea and in principle provisions are made so that crude oil spills in the terminal do not reach the sea>>, says our source.
However, part of the crude would have already ended up outside the retention basin, with therefore a probability of ending up in the sea, adds our source. According to a Gabonese environmental expert, “this is the most significant pollution ever recorded in the Gulf of Guinea. It cannot be contained without international assistance. We have to intervene as soon as possible because of the rains”.
According to an anonymous source from the Pérenco oil company, "this situation comes as a result of a poor management from the Gabon Oil Company(GOC)". The source added that "They knew this could happen but they did not anticipate it". The name that comes back is that of the Managing director of the (GOC), Mrs. Odette Nzaba Makaya, whose responsibilities were to protect this situation to happen but unfortunately, it happened due to her "incompetences" says the source
