After confirming that he turned down more lucrative offers from Premier League clubs before signing a new contract with Barcelona this week, Ronald Araujo has stated that money was not the most important issue.

On Friday, Araujo, who is 23 years old, signed a contract deal that would keep him at Camp Nou until 2026, with a €1 billion release clause. The defender's previous contract was set to expire in 2023, and ESPN reported that Manchester United and Liverpool were willing to outbid Barcelona.

Despite the money available elsewhere, Araujo claimed his first decision was always to stay at Barca, which he joined in 2018."I'm incredibly happy, and I'm confident that remaining is the right decision since the club has a lot of excellent years ahead of it," the Uruguayan added.

"I've always been clear that I wanted to stay." There were enormous offers from other countries, but I'm content in Barcelona. My family like life here, and my teammates and fans have always made me feel welcome.

"I appreciate the work put forth by the club. We all contributed a little to reach an agreement, which is what we all want. The interest from the Premier Leaguef did not detract from my work at all. I was certain of what I desired. True, money is an issue, but it isn't the most significant factor for me. "I am content in Barcelona."

Along with Pedri, Ansu Fati, and Ferran Torres, Araujo is one of a growing number of young players at Barca who have been given a €1 billion release clause.

With Barcelona certain to finish the current season without a trophy for the second time in three seasons, the centre-back believes the club's young potential will help them reclaim success.

"The plan is to stay here for a long time," Araujo stated. "Perhaps in two years I'll be able to renew and go for even more [success]." That's exactly what I'm going for.

In that regard, I am ecstatic. I would not have stayed if it had not been for that. I am a winner who strives to win at all times. We have a talented young team on our hands. Imagine how good the youngsters will be in a few years if they continue to show how terrific they are now.

"We may also add additional personnel to the project, and I am confident that good times are on the way for Barcelona."

Araujo, who has made 78 appearances for Barcelona since being promoted from the B squad, is also hoping to win the World Cup with Uruguay later this year in Qatar.

"With the national team we have," he remarked, "I'm really excited." "There are a number of talented young guys in the mix.
