Erling Haaland was a target for Manchester United until he joined Borussia Dortmund in 2020.Hans-Joachim Watzke, the CEO of Borussia Dortmund, has admitted that his club had to include a release clause in Erling Haaland's contract in order to avoid losing him to Manchester United.
In 2019, Haaland established himself as one of the most intriguing players in world football, and there was a rush to sign him ahead of the January transfer window in 2020. United were intrigued by the Norwegian wonder, particularly because his compatriot Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was in charge at Old Trafford at the time, had aided his spectacular rise at Molde.
Dortmund, on the other hand, jumped ahead of the pack to get Haaland for just £18 million, and he has only improved since then. The 21-year-£63 old's million release clause is expected to be activated this summer, putting him in position for a huge move. Manchester City, his father's previous club, are the favourites, but Watzke has revealed how he almost moved to the red half of Manchester two and a half years ago.
He told 19:09 Talk, "We granted Erling Haaland a release clause... otherwise he would have gone to Manchester United." He then made a strong suggestion that the striker would depart Signal Iduna Park this summer: "He must make a decision, and it will happen at some point. But I'm confident we'll discover the new Haaland. We require a new Haaland.United withdrew out of the agreement once Haaland's transfer to Dortmund was official, according to MEN Sport, because they refused to agree to the same buyout clause and a portion of future sales going to his agent Mino Raiola.
Interim United manager Ralf Rangnick has advised the club that in order to be successful, they need to add young players of Haaland's caliber: He stated, " "Haaland is a young player, perhaps 21 or 22 years old, and he is one of the ones I mentioned earlier. On the other hand, he has grown into one of the world's most expensive strikers.
"He could be one of those cases where I believe the focus should be on identifying and resolving the problem. It is evident that the club and the squad require additional players, as a number of players have lost their contracts, others are no longer available, and other players may like to gain more playing time and are now on loan. The club clearly requires a large number of fresh players.
"I've already stated my opinion on the subject. To me, it's critical that the club identifies scouts and then acquires those kind of players in order to rebuild Manchester United into one of the best teams in the world, and you need attitude, talent, physicality, pace, and skills to do so."
