According to transfer source Dean Jones, Manchester United is still interested in Villarreal defender Pau Torres.

The Red Devils are one club rumored to be interested in signing the 25-year-old this summer, and Jones believes he has a decent chance of doing so.

United, Manchester City, and Chelsea, according to the dependable Fabrizio Romano, are all keeping an eye on Torres ahead of the forthcoming transfer window.

The Spaniard has a €60 million (£50 million) release clause that will most likely be activated in the summer, and was apparently a target for United last year while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was still in charge.Torres has played a key role for Villarreal this season, appearing in over 40 games for the Spanish club.

Given that, he is a player Unai Emery will not want to lose, but if Torres' release clause is triggered and he wishes to leave, the former Arsenal manager will be unable to stop him.The race to acquire Torres will be strong, but Jones expects United to be right in the thick of it, telling GIVEMESPORT that the Red Devils might emerge victorious.

"Pau Torres, they're still looking at, for sure," Jones stated when asked if Torres may be one of Erik ten Hag's first acquisitions at Old Trafford. "I believe there's a reasonable chance that will happen.Unquestionably. Because United has had so many problems in central defense this season, Ten Hag must make bringing in a new centre-back like Torres a priority.

Raphael Varane arrived from Real Madrid last summer, bringing with him a lot of expectation — after all, the France international is a four-time Champions League winner. However, he has been unable to avoid injury this season, which is a cause for concern. Then there's Harry Maguire, who has been chastised for his performance throughout the season.

"It's been a difficult season for the squad and for Harry, who hasn't played good enough," United icon Roy Keane stated on Sky Sports recently (via MailOnline). "You're attempting to lead a group, and it doesn't appear to be a very good group.

He needs to improve himself; if you want to be a good captain, you have to be at the top of your game and hope the rest will take care of itself."

Given the foregoing, United would be prudent to spend this summer on Torres or another center defender.
