Delegates from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) who gathered at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) hall last Thursday to elect a Bolgatanga Central Constituency official were shocked when one of them fell to his death.
The deceased, Paul Anika, 37, who was appointed by the government to the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly, was reportedly unconscious when the election results were announced and his candidate, Awudu Asonga, lost to Kwame Annaba by two votes.
Mr. Anaba won 355 votes and Mr. Asonga received 353 votes and a third candidate. Abdul-man Alhassan Amalba received 77 votes out of 797 eligible voters.

Anika, Asonga's main campaigner, had hoped that the candidate would run for office.
However, when the results were announced, Azika collapsed, prompting some delegates to rush him to Bolgatanga Regional Hospital for emergency treatment.
Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

How it happened
Confirming the incident on Graphic Online on Friday, the district's first vice-chairman, Thomas Ayoore Adams, said that due to delays in the first election, voting and counting began late into the evening.
He said that after counting Anaba's (first vote) count, he received 351 votes, which gave Tsonga supporters hope to win by a narrow margin.
