MiDA offers a booster power substation at the University of Ghana
The Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) has provided 52 Mega Volts Amps (MVA) Primary Substation and its associated Interconnecting Circuits (ICC) to operate the University of Ghana Medical Center (UGMC) and its environs.
The center, which will ensure the provision of sustainable energy, has been extended to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, Ghana Standards Authority, Okponglo area, Fiesta Royale, and Ghana Institute of Public Administration (GIMPA) and surrounding areas.
The $ 11 million projects is funded by the United States Government-sponsored Ghana Power Compact Program, through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).
Opening the facility, Deputy Minister of Energy, Mr. Mohammed Amin Adam, said the station was connected to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) 33kV sub-transmission Network through a total of 24 km of 33kV connecting circuits.
According to him, the UGMC Primary Substation is one of the many assets of the electrical infrastructure, which is part of the ECG Financial and Operational Turnaround (EFOT) Project of the Compact Program.
He said the equipment inside the sub-station has two 20/26MVA transformers, outdoor built-in, and switchable items stored in the building under the control type.
"The station is rated to provide any future expansion of 33kV and 11kV switchgear and power is delivered to UGMC and other load stations at 41.4 km of 11kV load circuits," he said.
The Deputy Minister said the UGMC could now operate in a strong and reliable environment.
"As the subway station is close to these facilities and has sufficient inefficient power, the risk of mechanical malfunction due to fluctuations in electricity is greatly reduced," he said.
Mr. Adam said the station would improve electricity supply, quality, and reliability and reduce technological losses in the ECG Distribution system, ultimately contributing to improved financial performance.
He added that it would also improve the inefficiency and consequently improve the reliability of the sub-transmission network in the specified areas.
The minister said sustainable energy was essential for development, adding that electricity was no longer a luxury but a necessity, and commended MiDA and the MCC for their professionalism and diligence in ensuring the implementation of the plan.
Professor Yaa Ntiamoa-Baidu Chair, MiDA said the Compact Program recognizes the need for the ECG to meet the growing energy demand and improve the services it provides to its clients as well as significant community inclusion in the Accra East and Accra West regions.
Steven Marma, Director of State for Housing, said his clothes would continue to fund projects that would benefit the people of Ghana, adding that the MCC was investing $ 316 million through the Ghana Agreement.
UGMC Executive Director, Dr. Darius Osei, thanked MiDA, MCC, and the government for providing them with sustainable electricity, saying "As a health facility we need sustainable and sustainable electricity to function effectively."
The substation is made up of Messrs Eiffage Energie Systémes of France and the connecting and exporting circuits by Messrs TBEA Co. Ltd. of China.
