Manchester United has been the most powerful club in English football for the greater part of four decades, with enormous financial clout. 5. Memphis Depay (£25 million) is the fifth player on the list.United paid PSV Eindhoven £25 million for Depay, reportedly beating out PSG, Arsenal, and Liverpool for the Holland international. Depay had plenty of confidence, as demonstrated by his desire to wear the No.7 shirt, and his United career got off to a good start, with a couple of goals against Club Brugge in the Champions League play-offs, but it wasn't long before Louis van Gaal questioned him. When Depay returned to Holland, he revealed his disappointment with his body's delayed adaption to the Premier League.
4. Morgan Schneiderlin is worth £25 million.
Despite impressing throughout his two-year time at Southampton, the Frenchman always exuded the image of someone intimidated by Man Utd's prominence. The midfielder didn't stay long enough to make an effect on the Old Trafford supporters, leaving after only a season and a half to join Everton. United, on the other hand, barely earned a profit on the player, with the Toffees paying £24 million to bring him to Goodison Park.
3. Juan Sebastian Veron (£28.1 million)
Not only was he the most expensive Manchester United player of all time, but he was also the most expensive move in British football history at the time. His first season with the club started well, with three goals in United's first four league games, but he struggled to adjust to the Premier League's faster tempo, where he was allowed less time and space on the ball. His second season was not much better, but he did well in the Champions League, where the slower tempo of the games allowed him to have an impact on the game before a serious injury ended his career.

Real, he was fantastic; at PSG, he was amazing; at United, he was dreadful. We all remember Di Maria's scorching first few weeks and that goal against Leicester, but what else did he do at Old Trafford? There isn't much. Before going on to excel in Ligue 1, his short season at United, during which he and his family were victims of a terrible burglary while at their house, was worth nowhere near the £59.7m invested.
1. Romelu Lukaku
Chelsea and United were both interested in signing Lukaku and Alvaro Morata in the summer of 2017. Perhaps things might have worked out differently if the two flop strikers had switched destinations.
