The government of Ghana, in April, released some 67 million Ghana cedis to cater for the feeding and allowances of teacher trainees in response to a directive issued by the Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education, PRINCOF, to the Ministry of Education, that, from 8th May, 2022, teacher trainees should start feeding themselves because of the huge sum government owed them. Out of the money government released, PRINCOF'S debt has been paid and the Students Loan Trust Fund, SLTF, has duly disbursed the trainees' allowances to them. Teacher trainees in Ghana receive monthly stipends of GH¢ 400 from the government as allowance. About half of this sum is used for their feeding by the Colleges of Education. A little fraction is paid to the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana, TTAG, as dues and the rest, approximately GH¢ 200 is given directly to them as pocket money. But for some months now government had not been paying the allowances. Due to this, Colleges of Education could not pay for the food items they procured. Food suppliers then withdrew their services so that, in effect, some Colleges of Education had food items that could feed their students for only a week. This was what drove PRINCOF to issue the "Operation Feed Yourself" directive. Teacher trainees are to wait for a confirmatory SMS before going to their respective banks for withdrawal. TTAG has said that it will address any disparities that might have occurred during the payment process so all concerned students should rest assured. One thing worth noting is that, trainees in level hundred were not included in the payments though they have been in school for a whole semester. There have been calls from NGO'S and stakeholders like African Education Watch and IMANI Ghana on the government to scrap the allowance policy because they see it as wasteful. Yet there are others, like TTAG, who believe that it is beneficial and will be detrimental to teacher Education in Ghana, if scrapped.
