Luka Modric has responded to critics ahead of their champions league clash with Manchester City on Wednesday. The Croatian midfielder was responding to claims that Carlo Ancelotti's side had been "fortunate" this season and reasserted his team's confidence ahead of their match against Manchester City.
Luka Modric, a midfielder for Real Madrid, has lashed out at the club's haters, claiming that allegations that his team has been fortunate this season make them laugh. Los Blancos won their 35th La Liga title on Saturday, defeating Espanyol 4-0, and the celebrations in Madrid lasted far into the evening. Despite being eliminated by Manchester City in a seven-goal first-leg thriller at the Etihad, they remain hopeful of European triumph this season.
Some have speculated that the Spanish giants' success this season was achieved even though they are not a classic team. Carlo Ancelotti's side came from behind to beat PSG and Chelsea in the Champions League to reach the quarterfinals, before riding their luck against City. In his pre-match press conference, Modric responded to suggestions that Real Madrid has been fortunate thus far this season, saying, "Let them think what they want." This is an unjust opinion, and they only serve to make us laugh, but anyone has the right to say whatever they want.
"We're focused on our work, not what people say outside the club," says the player. By chance, it's impossible to win against so many teams, so many champions, and to reach so many semi-finals. It takes quality and faith; these are the characteristics that distinguish us."
Despite being clearly second best for the majority of the first leg and behind by a single goal, there is a sense that Real Madrid may have a psychological advantage heading into the game. Those suggestions have been bolstered by Modric's assurance that, despite their weekend celebrations, his team is ready for the second match.
"We are really confident," the Croatian midfielder continued, "because we know that we didn't play our greatest game in the first leg and still scored three goals." We'll do better tomorrow. We have history, as well as quality and character. This club has won a lot of significant games and holds the record for most Champions League titles. "We never give up."
"We know what we have to achieve, this is the most crucial game of the season," Modric concluded. We have to play our best game this year, and we are prepared."
Real Madrid is looking for a fifth Champions League title since the 2013/14 season, and they want to go one step further than the previous season when they were beaten in the semi-finals by Chelsea.
