Man City and Pep Guardiola are expected to spend big in the summer transfer window but Liverpool have a £7m example as to why they don't need to make the same move.

We are almost there. The end of the season is ever so near, and with it, the transfer merry go round will commence in full flow.

It will be hard to top the craziness of last summer. But with two of Europe's biggest marksmen purportedly on the move, this summer promises plenty of frenzy and excitement. As always, Liverpool's rivals, Manchester City will be at the forefront of the spending.

Pep Guardiola's side are reportedly looking to bring in Erling Haaland this summer, and they may make other investments as well beyond the Borussia Dortmund forward.

Liverpool on the other hand are unlikely to spend in excess of £50m on a player as detailed in a recent report in the ECHO. The report has caused widespread indignation by some tribal sections of the club's supporter base. On a surface level there is no denying, FSG's lack of spending is frustrating in contrast to Manchester City.

However, in reality, Liverpool simply have less of a need to buy. This summer, Liverpool need to concentrate on keeping their existing star players at the club, while building a team for the future. The arrival of Fábio Carvalho for £7m perfectly illustrates the kind of business Liverpool should be targeting.

One of the stars of the Championship and Portugal's U21 side, Carvalho is destined for a big future at just 19 years of age — but he is also a player who can add another dimension to Liverpool's midfield with his ability to break into the box and contribute with goals and assists on a regular basis.

Carvalho not only represents the future but he will bolster Liverpool in the present, too, and he will arrive all for just £7m — a small fraction of what Manchester City will fork out for Erling Haaland.

Some reports have suggested Liverpool's next move after Carvalho will be 18-year-old Aberdeen right-back, Calvin Ramsay. Again, he is a player with a promising future who will be affordable for FSG, but who will also be able to add depth in a position where Liverpool have had to rely on Trent Alexander-Arnold's availability for far too long.

Ramsay's playing style is reminiscent of Alexander-Arnold having demonstrated a similar proclivity to attacking and delivering the ball into dangerous situations, and while the step-up to Liverpool will take him time to fully adjust, in the long-term he could become an extremely smart acquisition in the same way as Kostas Tsimikas has proven himself at Anfield over time.

Liverpool do not need a significant change this summer. But players like Ramsay and Carvalho can still add to the already established impressive depth in the squad. They may not be the big names and lucrative transfers the fans will wish for, but it's what Liverpool need.
