Guardiola: "If you're to knock Madrid out, you've got to perform well in both legs"

NEWS STORY| 2022-05-03

"We’ll see two very attack-minded teams out there at the Bernabéu," added De Bruyne in the build-up to the encounter between Real Madrid and Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola and Kevin De Bruyne addressed the media in a press conference on the eve of the Champions League semi-final second-leg clash between Real Madrid and Manchester City (9pm CET). The City coach previewed the contest in the following terms: “In games like this, there’ll be moments of control and moments of transitions. It won't be the same throughout the 90 minutes. We came away feeling happy after the first leg and could have got a better result, but things could also have been worse. In any event, we knew that the tie would be decided over the two legs. If you're to knock Madrid out, you've got to perform well in both legs.”

“Stones won't be fit for the game and will not travel to Madrid. Walker has trained and could well be in the team, but we'll make a decision on that one tomorrow.”

Ancelotti & Madrid’s LaLiga title success

“I congratulate him on it. I admire him, he has been all over the world and in many countries and managed some fantastic teams. His sides have always played very good football and he’s also a fantastic person. I met him many years ago and he's always calm and keeps his emotions in perfect check.”

The latest El Clásico

“I've only seen the highlights. I didn't watch the full match. I know that Ancelotti took a tactical decision that he won’t here and so I don't think that I can take anything from it that’ll help us in this game.”

De Bruyne: "It’ll be very different game to the first leg"

“We’ll see two very attack-minded teams out there tomorrow night. It’ll be a very different game to the first leg. We're in good form. the only thing that people can say against us is that we’re yet to have won the Champions League. Apart from that, we've always been up there and fighting to win it. Our consistency levels have been incredible. Tomorrow night is another step.”

Guardiola’s role in the team

“He'll prepare us properly. Even when we play a lower-league team in the cup, his attention to detail is always the same. He's helped me to develop in many areas. I don't know whether or not that would be the case with another coach. What he's done with the players is incredible, but they too have worked very hard to achieve it. If we didn't listen and work hard we wouldn't improve and so it's a mix of the two.”
