Two friends, who stole two rented cars in 2018, were sentenced to 14 years in prison by the Accra Regional Court.
Unemployed Stephen Yaw Asiedu Debrah, 35, has been sentenced by a court to eight years in prison for four counts of conspiracy and two counts of theft.
His accomplice, Cephas Ofoe Sechie, a businessman, was sentenced to six years in prison on four counts of conspiracy to commit crimes.
This is after a court led by Priscilla Dapaah Mireku found them guilty at the end of the trial.
However, the court acquitted Walker Osman, the third accused in the case.
Osei Bediako and his associates are said to be full.
The prosecutor, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Agnes Boafo, said Richard Quansah was the first plaintiff and Mr. Collins Ansah the second plaintiff.
Prosecutors said Mr. Ansah had worked with Maxi Plus Ventures, a car rental company in Legon, Accra.
It said Debrah lived in Osu while Sechie lived in La, Accra.
Walker Osman, also known as Alhaji, is a worker living in Caprice.
Prosecutors said that on May 22, 2018, the first plaintiff, Mr. Richard Quansah, received a call from Debrah saying he needed a car to rent.
He said Mr. Quansah then drove his Toyota Corolla with registration number GE 7686-18 to Atomic Junction in Accra and demanded a Debrah photo card so he could fill out a car rental form.
He said Debrah introduced herself as a SWAT Unit Officer at the Ghana Police Service, headquartered, and showed her a photo of herself wearing a police uniform on her cellphone.
Prosecutors said Debrah rented a car for two days.
According to prosecutors, on May 24, 2018, Debrah called Mr. Quansah to get another car but he (Quansah) did not have one.
The prosecutor said Mr. Quansah, therefore, called a second plaintiff, Mr. Collins Ansah, who pulled out his Toyota Corolla with registration number GR 4176-15, and the same was given to Debrah.
Prosecutors said Debrah then asked for an extension of the first car (Mr. Quansah's car).
It said a police investigation revealed that on May 22, 2018, Debrah handed over Seechie to Mr. Quansah's car to check on the buyer.
He said on May 23, 2018, all the suspects met and devised a plan to sell Mr. Quansah's car.
Prosecutors said Debrah, Sechie, and Osman asked Osei Bediako, now a colleague, to smuggle letters in Seechie's name and photograph her.
The prosecutor said that on the same day, Osman led Sechie and Bediako to a witness, Awudu Mohammed, to obtain a GHC 20,000 loan and used the first car as security.
Two days later, the prosecutor said Bediako went to Awudu Mohammed to get more than GHC2,000.
When Mohammed submitted the vehicle documents to the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA), he was told that the documents were false.
Prosecutors said that on May 26, 2018, Osman, Debrah, and Bediako made forged documents on the second car to get another loan from Arish Abdul.
According to the prosecutor, the next day, Osman led Debrah to Arish Abdul to sell a second car and counterfeit papers but he (Abdul) refused.
It said a police investigation revealed that the second car was sold to another buyer who offered the same for spraying.
It said the second complainant after the end of the lease term called Debrah but could not be reached.
It was reported to the police and the two vehicles were tracked down in Lapaz and Russia, all over Accra.
Prosecutors said a Toyota Corolla with registration number GR 4176-15 was found in the house of Clement, a car dealer.
In the case of a vehicle with registration number GR 7686-18, the prosecutor said it was found in Awudu Mohammed's house and recovered.
