Six football players whose tragic deaths on the field shook the football community to its core

 

 

Football can be a very dangerous sport, with a long history of on-field injuries that have ended a player's career or life. Here are five football players whose tragic deaths on the field of play shook the football community to its core. 

 

1. Marc-Vivien Foe 

 

Marc-Vivien Foé was a Cameroonian footballer who played defensive midfield for both club and country. Foé had success in France's Division 1 and England's Premier League before his sudden death during an international match from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which shocked the football community worldwide. He was posthumously decorated with the Commander of the National Order of Valour and had his shirt number 23 retired by Manchester City.

 

2. Piermario Morosini

 

Piermario Morosini was a professional footballer from Italy who played as a midfielder. Morosini died on the pitch during a match between Pescara and Livorno on 14 April 2012. Morosini was rushed to the Santo Spirito hospital, but he died before arriving, according to later reports. 

 

3. Okwaraji, Samuel 

 

Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji was a professional footballer who represented Nigeria at the international level. He was also a lawyer with a master's degree in international law from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome. On August 12, 1989, he collapsed and died of congestive heart failure during a World Cup qualification match against Angola at the Lagos National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos State.

 

4. Cristiano Junior

 

Cristiano Jnior was a Brazilian footballer who played as a forward for Dempo before being killed in an on-field collision on December 5, 2004. In the 78th minute of the Federation Cup finals, Jnior collided with Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Subrata Pal. He collided with the keeper, staggered away, and then collapsed while scoring his second goal after chasing the ball into the box. 

He died upon arrival at Hosmat Hospital, according to hospital officials. "At no time, was the hospital requested to provide doctors, and no agreement or contract for doctors was made," hospital officials said. 

 

5. Robbie James 

 

"Robbie" Robert Mark James was a Welsh international footballer who played for a number of clubs;Swansea City, Stoke City and Queens Park Rangers. Llanelli player-manager Robbie James collapsed and died during a match against Porthcawl Town on February 18, 1998. He was forty years old. 

 

6. Ivan Beli Krsti? 

 

Ivan Beli Krsti was a footballer from Serbia who played for FK Radniki Ni. He began playing for the club at the age of nine, later joining the first team and becoming captain. On May 29, 2000, a tragic event occurred that took his life. Ivan and his teammates were on the practice field when the weather changed. Ivan immediately fell to the ground after being struck by lightning. When Ivan's teammates arrived at his location, he was already dead. Ivan was only a month away from turning twenty when he suddenly died.
